Blackout at a petrochemical plant

Background

The length of the blackout forced the operators to shut down production and ensure the safety of the equipment, employees and nearby communities.  

And rightly so: the various processes used were undergoing exothermic chemical reactions. Drastic measures were needed to avoid any thermal runaway. While the emergency generators avoided a disaster, material damage was observed. 

How Stelliant proceeded

A specialist loss adjuster of the Stelliant Group was sent to the petrochemical plant without delay, in order to guide and assist the policyholder in dealing with this large-scale claim. As the plant consumed a lot of energy, the emergency generators could not fully compensate for the power cut even though they had saved the day. The loss adjuster observed significant problems with the reactors, steam crackers, steam networks and even the support networks, etc.

However, the damage was not just material. While the plant was partly paralysed, the policyholder suffered heavy operational losses. With a view on this aspect, a financial loss adjuster assessed the intangible damage.

During the claim, the loss adjusters showed a great deal of erudition and diplomacy to avoid the claim escalating into legal proceedings. An amicable solution was finally found through a settlement between the petrochemical company and the grid operator.
